When you think about Kentucky, you may not think about the Amish. However, there are Amish communities in the state. People who drive around buggies need to make sure that they understand how to be safe. Spooking a horse, getting too close to the buggy and other unsafe actions can lead to fatal accidents.
People in buggies do not have safety belts, air bags or other equipment to keep them safe. Similar to a motorcyclist, riders in buggies can be thrown from their vehicles easily. That’s what happened in this tragic accident.
According to an Aug. 22 report, a driver has been accused of striking and killing an Amish man who was riding on a buggy at the time of the collision. The 64-year-old woman who caused the crash now faces allegations of driving while intoxicated.
The news report states that the Amish man was killed when the woman’s SUV hit the buggy from behind. The 52-year-old man was thrown from the buggy. He was less than a mile from home at the time of the crash.
After the crash, the man’s horse fled the scene, and this alerted neighbors to the fact that something was wrong. The woman who caused the collision is now facing charges for operating a vehicle while she was using drugs or alcohol. Presently, it is still being decided if she will face additional charges for the man’s wrongful death.
Unsafe driving doesn’t have a place on the roads. Drivers must respect others on the roads and be cautious around them, no matter what they are driving.
