Can you move your vehicle after you're in a crash?

One common question people often have after crashes is if they should move their vehicles. In some ways, it makes sense to keep the vehicles where they are because any investigation that takes place can see exactly how they hit and where they stopped. The truth is, though, that it might be safer and better for those around you to move the vehicle off the road.

Most police agree that if no one is hurt and a vehicle is able to be moved, you should move it to the side of the road. The priority, though, is to call 911 and make sure you're taking care of anyone who is injured.

If you move your vehicles, won't it impact the investigation?

It may, but there are many things that play a role in an investigation that won't be affected. For example, skid marks on the road, glass or debris and other signs of an incident will still be there.

You can take a few photos of the scene (if it's safe to do so) if you are worried about preserving evidence. If you're concerned about the ability to drive beyond moving your vehicle to the side of the road due to the damage it has suffered, call a tow truck to get your vehicle to a mechanic.

This information should be particularly helpful if you are hit on a highway or busy street, since moving your vehicle to the side of the road helps keep traffic moving and makes it easier for emergency vehicles to get through to the scene.
