What are some signs of a spinal cord injury?

On Behalf of | Jan 4, 2022 | Motor Vehicle Accidents

After a car accident, you may begin to notice aches and pains all throughout your body, along with other physical signs of an injury.

Knowing what spinal cord trauma feels like can help you know if you are struggling to identify the source of these feelings.

Increased weakness

According to the Mayo Clinic, you may begin to feel lightheaded at times after an injury. You could also have issues with staying upright or not falling while walking around. This incoordination, along with instances of tingling or sudden weakness in your hands or feet, can impact your daily life.

You may struggle to operate a car or accomplish tasks at work due to this problem. It may not even occur to you at first that these problems stem from a spinal cord injury.

Lung problems

Continued coughing fits that leave you tired or instances of odd secretions coming from your lungs can surprise you. One area spinal trauma often affects is the lungs, which can leave you struggling to breathe properly in the days or weeks following an accident.

You may not even notice these symptoms right away, since the surge of adrenaline after an accident can mask any pain.

Changing sensations

While handling hot liquids or cold items, you may notice that you do not feel the range of temperatures on your skin like you had before an accident. This change in sensation can confuse you and leave you at risk for a burn in some cases.

Knowing how spinal cord trauma affects your body can help you realize just how many areas of daily life can change after an accident.
